Tarantino Reloaded
Disappointed with Quentin's new film "Kill Bill". All I can say about it is at least it was better than "Matrix Reloaded". They both seem to hit about in the same space. Maybe Tarantino's movie is better because it doesn't take itself so seriously and doesn't have all the merchandising tie-in's. What was up with that Sonny Chiba sequence? It just seemed to go on and on with no purpose other than to have him in the movie. And that long sequence of Uma trying to wiggle her toes. I mean, I know Quentin's got a foot thing but wtf?
Big plot holes. Stuff like that usually doesn't bother me if the energy of the movie can sustain my disbelief. It just wasn't there for me this time. Still, the movie is totally worth seeing. It's just not as good as "Jackie Brown".
I did finally get to see "Better Luck Tomorrow". Highly recommended. Good acting, story, and the cinematography and set design gave the film a cool neon look.
Both movies challenge our viewpoints of various subcultures. Where "Better Luck Tomorrow" pulls it off, "Kill Bill" is more just an exercise in style. Ostensibly busting the stereotypical role of women in film --that of the cowering/shreiking "love interest" --having an ultraviolent female character (at least in this film) really just glorifies men. Most of the violence in the world being perpetrated by men (after all), having a female screen hero doing the same thing is not so much liberating as it is subjugating them to this typically male viewpoint.
Sigorney Weaver as Ripley "Alien" is still the high water mark for me. "Alien" is a good example of the kind of plot hole I'm talking about. She goes back for the cat? It works while you're watching the movie (it works really well), and it isn't until later that you realize how far they stretched Ripley's maternal instincts.
I've seen some noise about people being upset about how Lucy Liu is perpetuating the myth of the asian dragon woman. Like Mister Pink says when talking about the waitresses: "Fuck all that", she kicks ass.
