Is Windows Ready For The Desktop?

Got a laugh from reading a couple articles found via slashdot. They're funny and there's some truth to it. Every time I see one of those "is linux ready for the desktop" articles I kind of read them in horror, wondering what the fuck they're talking about. The author of these articles turns the whole thing on it's head:

"I found that the tools needed to give the Microsoft Explorer Web browser included with Windows XP some of the same modern features that are standard in the Firefox Web browser that comes with SimplyMEPIS are pay-for add-ons, which seemed somewhat silly. Even the "better" version -- Outlook -- of Microsoft's email software costs extra, as do most of the ftp clients available for Windows XP.

Yes, Firefox, the Thunderbird email suite, GAIM, GIMP, and many other well-regarded open source programs are now available for Windows XP, but each must be downloaded and installed individually. They are not included in the base Windows XP install. This makes no sense. If you pay more for Windows XP than for a typical Linux distribution, shouldn't it come with the same -- or better -- software on its installation CD?"

NOTE: he mentions a particular linux distribution, but the same could be said of pretty much any of them.

Kacked Redesigned For Podcasts

No, I don't mean to do a podcast. Though that may come later.

I added a feature to the music section where it lists the podcasts I have on my shuffle. This will be automatically updated each time I sync my ipod --and you can play them right from the page. So you can listen to the same stuff I do...

Strangely the only web browser that doesn't display the java applet correctly (among the browsers that do java) is Safari 1.2.

I'll have to compile my own versions of the flash player I'm using to incorporate the background color of the page. I think that will fix it.

But then, I'm going back to a rotating color scheme based on day of the week, so I'll have to compile 6 different versions of the flash mp3 player. All with different background colors.

Still some fine tuning to do but it's nice to be back to a simpler design. At least the css part is simpler. The backend is a bit more complex.

And, as usual, the comics section is lagging behind. I'm going to have to reconceive that section of the site so that anytime the site is redesigned that part just tags along. Too much work getting it to fit in.

Shell Games

Bought a book on the z-shell: "From Bash To Z Shell". Been reading through it. So far it looks like it's a pretty good book.

Been using the z-shell for quite a while now and learning kind of as I go. All the docs I can find online take the approach of assuming that you're proficient in bash --which is only partly true. They assume you're switching to zsh from bash. Not really true in my case. I'm kind of a bash lamer, and I figured if I'm going to be using zsh why bother learning bash?

But anyway, I wrote another bash script tonight. Pretty happy with this one. I've started looking at whatever I do on the computer that is repetitive and trying to think of a way to script it. That's what computers are good at eh? Doing the boring part.

Sometimes I'll convert videos I find on the net to kvcd format, so my roommate's can watch them on the tv using the dvd player. Each time I do it though I've been needing to write a custom command line to run encode2mpeg. Tonight I wrote a wrapper script for it that determines the framerate of the file and then encodes it to kvcd. Now I can just throw a bunch of videos in the same folder, run the script, and in the morning they're all converted to kvcd format.
