Pirates, Ninjas, Midgets, Zombies or Big Tits

That's my roommate there in the thumbnail picture. Watching fake explosions on "The History Channel". I was experimenting with a digital camera my daughter gave me. A nice one though I still need practice taking candid shots. Tough to focus in low light conditions. And well... that's just what you get sometimes when you're taking a candid shot. What good is it if everybody knows you're shooting the picture? I need to read the manual.

Looking at Blosxom and Pyblosxom sites a while back (for inspiration) I came across Thumbscrew. A tool for creating polaroid like thumbnail images. Well! I just had to have them there thumbnails on my site. Problem was it only runs on Mac OS X.

So I went through a phase of experimenting with Mac OS X. Installing it and running it natively on my Intel box, and running it in a virtual machine with Vmware. Neither experience being very satisfying. Educational maybe. It worked well enough that I was able to re/create/modify the bulk of the thumbnails now used on the site. Not very satisfying though... having to fire up OS X in order to create some thumbnails. I figured I could do as well with a script maybe fashioned around Imagemagick's ability to create thumbnails. But then bam! there it was --Polaroid like thumbnails created with Imagemagick.

So yeah. Now I can make my own Polaroid like thumbnails without resorting to the use of OS X. Ah well, it's fun to experiment . Oh yeah, click on my roommate to get a bigger out of focus view of the picture. That's iBox that's popping up that larger picture. Nice. So many litebox clones to choose from now and everybody seems to be using one too. Jeepers, I still have code for the original in my css.

And oh yeah --why my roommate bother's with that trash is beyond me. If there are no Pirates, Ninjas, Midgets, Zombies or Big Tits then what good is it?

Ipod Shuffle --Pain In The Ass

I was installing Windows 2000 on a spare drive I had laying around. I wanted to play some Duke Nukem and I thought I could do it on 2000. Wrong. Since Duke Nukem is basically a dos game it has to be Windows 98 (at least to play online.) No wonder it's been so long since I've played online.

So when I went to install the Windows 2000 installer showed the ipod I had stupidly left in the dock. And without thinking I formatted it. So after much pain I was able to get it back to a usable state. Gah. I hate proprietary software.

It's even worse with Apple's Windows software --it's like their proprietary stuff on top of Microsoft's proprietary stuff. It's enough to drive anyone nuts.

I would plug in the shuffle and none of the Apple software would recognize it as an ipod --even the app that is supposed to be used in case of emergency to restore the firmware and filesystem. Ended up having to dl and use a time trial version of dataviz's Macopener.

After installing Macopener I was able to at least format the shuffle --format it mac style anyway. Then iTunes was able to recognize the drive and kind of install the firmware. And then I was able to run Ipod Updater.

Gah. What a pain in the ass. I can't figure out if it's that it's not really a usb mass storage device, or if there is just not really any support for such on windows.

So I have to use software that can make pretend I'm on a mac when I'm on windows which I'm using because there is no easy way to initialize an ipod to fat32 on linux.

Make sense? Not really.

I like ipods but the software for them sucks ass.

Desktop Computer Still Hurting

Had some corruption of my root partition today. Gah. That's bad.

Still struggling with trying to get my desktop machine up to snuff. This round I switched out the motherboard for an identical one. Hopefully it will fix the random lock-up problem I've been having.

I think it probably will... I hope it will. While I'm at work tomorrow I think I'll run a memory test utility. Let it run in circles to see if I can stress test the machine or identify bad ram. If it's still going when I get home I'll be all set.

Desktop Bites The Dust

Gah. My desktop machine went south yesterday. I think it might have been the power supply. Video wasn't coming on. Nothing was coming on.

My brother felt sorry for me and gave me an older mobo and chip he had. Older for him, it's still faster than what I been running and it was state of the art in 2002. Athlon 2000+, spent the whole day testing memory and stuff like that yesterday. Seems to be working much better.

Installed the new version of Kanotix. There seems to be a bug in the experimental partition mapping part. I don't know if this is in the installer script or what but I was able to work around it by just remapping my home partition after install. Had me worried for a little bit though. I had been hacking away on this script I've been playing with --making a lot of progress, and then when I got up from a nap found my desktop computer in a nonbootable state. Freaked me out.

I guess it wouldn't have been too hard to recreate some of the features I had added. Some kind of backup scheme is a priority now. I have kind of taken Linus's advice to heart though and have just been "uploading" whatever stuff I wrte to my web server. It's kind of backed up that way, at least it's in two spots rather than one, and maybe someone else can use them too.
