Ultimate Linux Desktop

ratpoison (3k image)Interesting article on freshmeat (linked on slashdot) about the "The Antidesktop". I found the article to be kind of a blue print for where I have been trying to go with Linux on my desktop computer. Course it's more interesting to say that before I actually try it. Let's see what happens.

The thing that appeals to me about it is the focus on limiting the distractions of the desktop environment. Plus it will help me test the limits of what I can do while staying as purely in the text environment as possible.

While I was sniffing around I found a good Linux FAQ. I like this section (the whole FAQ is pretty good):

<>

Using Linux is about choice. At the core of it, Linux is very very powerful. In fact, DOS is a poor copy of Unix of which Linux is a clone. There are Super Computers running Beowulf Linux [yet another flavour!]. Incidentally, me and a friend of mine are also working on building a home super computer using a Beowulf Cluster; details are available here. But if you are talking about GUI, Linux does have some very stable ones. But why do we need to compare ourselves with Windows? There is sense in comparing with something that is absolute - which Windows is not. It is error and failure prone. Like Jeremy Lee said.....". . . . . . . . . . . I don't want Linux to be 'Just like Windows only Better!' , I want to challenge the basic assumptions that Microsoft Engineers have made. Windows is a poor copy of the Macintosh is a poor copy of the Xerox Star, now 20 years old. We haven't challenged the basic WIMP (windows, icons, mouse, pointer) paradigm in 20 years? Come on! "

Freshmeat: The Antidesktop

John / Got ratpoison working. It's the most no frills window manager I have even seen. I think I like it. The entire desktop is filled with whatever application I'm using at the moment. Even the file chooser dialogs expand to fill the screen. Talk about minimal distractions. hehe.

Linux Kicks Ass

linux (4k image)"...It turns out that the Linux doubters were wrong. Today Linux has become the hottest thing in corporate America since e-mail and maybe even Windows itself. Yes, most of the Linux IPOs are out of business or on the verge of going bust. Yes, few really believe Linux will ever replace Windows on the desktop. But on the back end, on servers in data centers rather than PCs on desktops, companies like Boeing, Amazon.com, E*Trade Financial, DreamWorks, Google, and virtually every major Wall Street firm have either finished reconfiguring big chunks of their servers to run Linux or are in the process of doing so. General Motors says it is likely to do the same in a year or so. Even the Chinese and German governments, along with about two dozen other countries, are taking a look at how they can save money by using Linux in their infrastructures..."

wheres the gaming content for linux?

I really liked the interface you showed me...no major games optimized for linux though.

John / Who plays games on a server?

"Yes, few really believe Linux will ever replace Windows on the desktop."

Personally I don't think this is true. Whether the os of the future is Linux or something else I think that operating systems will at some point be basically free and developed using the open source model. Who cares about games on the desktop anyway? It used to be that the first place that games came out was for Windows. That's changing now. Game developers are focusing more on consoles. Where the market is. In this regard Windows is starting to get into the same boat as Linux. You can play games on Linux, but the fact that we're even discussing this here leads me to think that you didn't really read the post (much less the article) before making this comment...

Maybe you should just install Nintendo OS.

sunil Pardon my ignorance, my liege, but wouldn't creating an open source platform make it vulnerable to someone who wants to rig a hole in it?

I prefer the XBOX "OS", heh heh

Trick or Treat?

HalloweenLinux (3k image)Mandrake Linux 9.0 just hit the servers. This is almost as exciting as when Jaguar Mac OS X came out. Kind of reminds me of getting the new Sears catalog. I'm downloading it right. If you're going to download it please wait till I'm done...

Windows Addiction

balls-inside (2k image)"...Most of the consumer-level problems with computer software -- crashes, bad design, version fatigue due to the perpetual upgrade treadmill - - are not inherent in the technology. They are, rather, consequences of user-hostile business models. Microsoft, and companies like them, have no incentive to solve the problems of crashes, poor security, and version fatigue. They like the perpetual upgrade treadmill. It's how they make money.Want to beat software version fatigue? It's easy, Glenn. Take control; dump the closed-source monopolists; get off the treadmill.

OpenOffice will let you keep your MS-Word documents and your Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations. Join the Linux revolution, and never see a Blue Screen of Death again..."

Richard http://lubrichs.mine.nu/ . . . lol - the only time the "Blue Screen of Death" was ever on my screen - was when i was being 'taught' - by a hacker friend - about computers - he intentionally set the system for a crash - and then (walked out) leaving me to figure - what went wrong - good friend - seriously - this is (how) i learned not to have problems [basically] with my systems . . . "It was a great Lesson" . . .

ps - as i have mentioned to Michael - i have spent only $500 in the last 12 years of building systems - without a hitch - and it's what i have - for the time being . . . so i work with it - "If it Ain't Broke - Why F@(& with IT" . . . lol

It seems to me that Richard had a problem with just cutting and pasting text. What was that about not being broke?
